Oprah Winfrey expands her business resume even more into films now, as her production company Harpo Films enters into a deal with HBO to make films for the channel.
According to Reuters, HBO announced Tuesday (December 26) that they inked a deal for a three-year exclusive deal for their channel. The move marks the end of Oprah's long relationship, 15 years to be exact, with ABC.
There is no word as to when the first HBO show, via Harpo, will air, but the company's execs said they plan to begin "brainstorming" with HBO in early 2009.
"I think the question will be, how are we going to do everything [we want to do], and that will be a Class A problem," HBO co-president Richard Plepler, told reports, according to the Chicago Tribute.
Harpo Films said that the move to HBO helped in their decision to move into the deal, citing limitations they faced at ABC.
"There are natural limitations to being on network television," Harpo Films president, Kate Forte, said. "HBO is not concerned with that. ... The measure of success for them is quality.
"For the last year and a half, every time I would bring a project to Oprah, she would say, 'This is perfect for HBO,' " Forte added.
The deal is said to include mini-series, movies, documentaries and series.
