This is a hands-on workshop and, therefore, will be limited to10 participants. Come with a draft of your story. It will be critiqued by myself, a professional writer for over 25 years. Attached are some suggested stories. Maximum word count is 1200. Please note that there are deadlines on some of these stories. Below is an overview of my involvement with Chicken Soup folks. There will be a $35.00 fee at the door. But you must RSVP. Space is limited. Several of my writers are already in these books. (313) 341-4487 History of my involvement with Chicken Soup: I was the only Detroiter in their very first CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE AFRICAN AMERICAN SOUL Book in 2004.(Page 171) I also was given the opportunity to be a judge for those stories (Not my own, of course). I was only one of 40 judges. By the time the stories came to us, they had been reviewed and rated by the Soup Headquarters. Nothing they rated less than a 9 or 10 came to us. There were hundreds of stories given to us to judge. (450 pages). Only 90 were chosen out of over 3,000 submitted. I was one of them. Because I saw the opportunity to tell my writers guild and others about this experience, many folks asked me to help them write winning stories. And I did. Several of them managed to get into the book. In 2006, CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN'S SOUL Book was published. Several of my writers submitted their stories. Two were selected. I also have a writer in CS FOR THE WORKING MOTHERS SOUL. CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE CAREGIVERS SOUL and CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE TWINS SOUL. The latter book will come out in March 2009. I have edited books for several of these ladies who submitted their stories. They are doing well. One lives in Philadelphia. She's a nurse, Kim Armstrong. She sold 300 copies of her book, HOPE AND HEALING: A NURSE'S STORY, right off the press to the VA Hospital. Although I can't guarantee that participants will win, they stand a better chance if I critique it before it is sent in. If their stories are selected, they will receive $200, plus 10 copies of the book. They do not lose their copyright to the story and it will go international. At the present time, there is a "Call for Stories" for the Soup Books. (See attached listing) Please be advised that there are deadlines for these stories.
