“I’m truly humbled,” Crawford, a noted surgeon, told a decked-out crowd that packed the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center.

Crawford brought the house down applauding the inauguration of President Barack Obama. He called the 17th Annual Trumpet Awards gala the culmination of “an unbelievable week, not only in America but in the world.”

Atlanta Police Chief Richard Pennington received the law award. Retired basketball superstar Earvin “Magic” Johnson, who was unable to attend the event, received the Living Legend Award.

Also honored were actress Pastor Paula White, Raven-Symone, television executive Johnathan Rodgers, entrepreneur Michael Roberts, the Rev. Paula White, Atlanta native and actor Chris Tucker, and the Tuskegee Airmen, the elite corps of black pilots and ground crew who fought in World War II.

The Trumpet Awards salute primarily African-American achievement in law, business, medicine, politics, entertainment and public service.

Sunday night’s black-tie gala concluded a weekend of events that included a prayer breakfast, a “High Tea with High Heels,” and the induction of 13 new footprints in the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta.
