"...You are trying to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why do you want to swallow up the LORD's inheritance?"
2 Samuel 20:1-22, NIV
With Mother's Day approaching, mothers are on all our minds.
Though I only have one mother, there are many women God has used mightily in my life. I refer to them as "Mothers in Israel", women who've thrown some things over wall to save me. Women like the one in the passage above.
When Joab came riding to the wall with blood on his dagger, the men gathered around the gate didn't respond, but somebody's mama had the sense to speak up. And she only had one question: What do I need to throw over this wall to bring peace?
Behind all the pretty suits, big hats and long titles it comes down to that:What have we thrown over the wall? Who did we help?
From the time I was young, God brought these kinds of women into my life: women who made room for me, made time for me. Some of them are from my family, others have become like family. They taught me how to dance...and how to pray. They taught me to love words...and appreciate a good pair of shoes. They told me I could write, but to leave the singing to someone else. They rejoiced when I didn't dare and mourned when I forgot how to grieve. They were my friends when I forgot how to be one. They taught me how to be a mother long after I'd become one. They reminded me who I was, whose I was, why I was...
My own mother, Donna Lee McElrath, gave birth to me in the flesh and in the spirit. She has sacrificed again and again so that my brother and I can be and do all that God wills for us.
This Mother's Day, think about the women who not only caused you to be in the natural but caused you to BE in the Spirit. Who died to release the seed that became you? Are you ready to become a Mother in Israel?
