Among the nearly two-dozen black ministers endorsing Jefferson Monday was Bishop Paul Morton of Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church. "We just don't have time to send an amateur to the Hill right now, it would just be crazy," Morton said, referring to Jefferson's opponent in the race, former TV reporter Helena Moreno, a political newcomer. Morton says the ministers' endorsement of Jefferson is not about race. "This is about the best person for the job, this is about experience, this is about power on the Hill," Morton said. Jefferson placed first, with about 25 percent of the vote, in the Oct. 4th Democratic primary despite his indictment on federal corruption charges. He faces a Nov. 4th runoff with Moreno. Jefferson is seeking his 10th term in Congress, representing a district that covers most of New Orleans and parts of Jefferson Parish.
